Growing up the tall kid with no athletic ability, Derek quickly embraced his love of the arts and never looked back. He is a Texas native and a graduate of the American Film Institute where he received an M.F.A in Screenwriting. His Hollywood journey has taken him from writing independent films, to developing TV pitches, reading for notable screenplay contests, while still finding time to teach film theory and screenwriting to the next generation of young artists. Most recently, he was selected as part of Imagine Entertainment's content accelerator where he is developing and writing an original TV project. Derek is a proud University of Miami graduate as well as the recipient of an M.F.A. in Screenwriting from the American Film Institute.

Description

From writing roundtables, to collaborative online writing projects, to peer-led critiques, and professional instruction from top level instructors, SOCAPA's Screenwriting Online continues to emphasize the importance of building relationships with other young artists and facilitating creative collaboration.

Students will have the option of developing two short screenplays (4-8 pages each), one longer screenplay (10-12 pages), or the first act of a feature-length screenplay. The two week screenwriting intensive provides students with the time, structure, feedback, and theory to hone their writing skills with a particular focus on story and character development. Students spend time workshopping and critiquing their own and each others's work, as well as analyzing films to discover what works and what doesn't.
